I posed a question last week on my personal Facebook page. “What do you think of when you hear the term: Holistic Health Coach?” Responses ranged from “your inner health” or “your whole health” to “Someone who uses a natural approach to teach you how to have a healthy mind, body, and spirit.” I also got “expensive,” or “someone I could not afford to hire, but would love to be friends with.” Most notably I got a few people who had no idea what a holistic health coach is.
Let’s start somewhere that I’m sure you’re familiar with.
What does a personal trainer do?
I’m sure you can easily answer this one. A personal trainer evaluates your fitness level, prescribes a workout regimen, skillfully instructs you on how to perform the various exercises, and motivates you to do your best even when your own motivation is low. The end goal is a more physically fit body that is capable of doing more than it was able to before.
Ok, now what does a football coach do?
Another easy one. A football coach is someone who is knowledgeable in the game of football that teaches others how to play the game. They come up with drills, motivate the team to work as a unit, and guide them during practice and games with the end goal of becoming better football players. A bonus is when the team also wins games.
So what about a dietician? What do they do?
A dietician is an expert in nutrition capable of giving dietary advice and help promote healthier eating habits. Their training allows them to tailor diets for individuals. They also take food nutrition and break it down so that the average person can understand.
Now, what does a health coach do?
A health coach encompasses many of these qualities in the three professions I mention above and many more. We serve as a guide, a mentor, to help you along your path to better health. Health coaches focus not only on food and exercise, but also other areas of your life that affects your overall health. Unless we have specific training we don’t diagnose disease, but we can take those suggestions that your doctor gives you and break things down so the goals are not only more attainable, but also sustainable. We work alongside professionals to support you and educate you as you navigate your health and wellness goals.
How do I do my own work as a holistic health coach?
I personally like looking at the whole person when working with my clients. Health isn’t just about what you eat or how you exercise. Health is also how you manage your stress, your relationship with yourself and others, even what kind of environment you live in and around. Complete health and wellness is multifaceted and must be approached in such a way.
I firmly believe that by using a natural approach to get to root causes of distress produces long-lasting results. I also believe that by approaching health from a natural and holistic point of view gives you power over your own body and environment. There is some truth in what we’re being told today, but the message is being lost in the money involved in the health and food industries. It’s hard to wade through all the noise to find what is true, especially what is true for you! That’s why hiring a health coach is a wonderful way to begin or even enhance your own health journey.
