Body Language: 6 Ways Your Body Talks About Food Sensitivity

How many of you ever been on a diet? How long did those diets last before you “fell off the wagon” and returned to your original starting point or worse? When you are on those diets, how do you feel? Do you feel energized or deprived? What if I told you it doesn’t have to be that way? What if I told you that you already have the tools you need to find your perfect diet?

Sounds like a big claim doesn’t it. Just bear with me for a little bit and you’ll see where I’m coming from.


Many diets out there tell you to eat this, not that. They may also suggest to keep your calorie count below a particular threshold. There’s a few problems with this, along with the notion of calories in/calories out balance when trying to lose weight. Our bodies are a beautiful, complex machines with millions of cells working in concert with one another. Many of those cells aren’t actually human cells, but bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even protozoa.

What does that mean?

Most of what makes us – us! – is actually a diverse colony of single-cell organisms. This colony, called our microbiome, are responsible for digestion of our food, synthesis of essential molecules, and even training our immune system. Depending on the composition of your microbiome colony will have a major influence over what food and drink your body can and can’t handle. Our microbiome is only part of the picture. Our own cells and organs produce enzymes that help break down and utilize the food and drink that we consume. Everything works in concert to change what we consume into energy for our body. This is where I tell you to stop dieting and start listening.


Between our own cells and our microbiome, we are given the tools to chemically break down our meals (we mechanically break down meals by chewing and to a certain extent the massaging of the food in the stomach and intestines via peristalsis). So what happens to our food if we don’t have the right enzymes to break them down? Well, they end up fermenting – just like wine and beer – and creating gas and bloating as it makes its way through your gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Gas and bloating is just *one* way your body tells you that the food and drink you’re consuming is having a hard time digesting.

Other ways your body tells you you’re choosing inappropriate foods are:

  1. Acne, eczema, and other skin rashes.
  2. Excess weight gain or inability to lose weight.
  3. Irregular menstrual cycles.
  4. Inconsistent stooling and excess gas
  5. Mood swings or other mild mental anguishes.
  6. “Seasonal allergies” are “year-round” allergies.

Do you suffer from any of these signs of food sensitivity? Most of us probably do, but we simply don’t realize it. For complicated reasons we have lost touch with our bodies and have become “sheep” to advertising and marketing. Critical thinking skills are lacking or rarely used. We are unconsciously taught to ignore our intuition. The good news is you aren’t stuck in this pattern of unconscious self harm!

What can we do about this?

How can I discover my food sensitivities and improve my overall health and wellness and reach my health and fitness goals?

My #1 tip – keep a food journal! It’s super easy to do, but you must be consistent in order to discover where your sensitivities lie and how they manifest. There are specific diets that can help discover your sensitivities faster for those who grab the bull by the horns. GAPS and Elimination Diets are the two biggest dietary systems that can help tackle this task.
